Musk clarified his statements regarding an 'autopilot' system and any possible collaboration with Google through Twitter:
Creating an autopilot for cars at Tesla is an important, but not yet top priority. Still a few years from production.- Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 7, 2013
Am a fan of Larry, Sergey & Google in general, but self-driving cars comments to Bloomberg were just off-the-cuff. No big announcement here- Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 7, 2013
In his comments to Bloomberg, Musk indicated his preference for a camera-based system, rather than the LIDAR-based radar system Google employs on its autonomous vehicle, citing the expense of such systems.
While completely driverless cars may still be years away from production, it's clear that automakers see an increased role for autonomous technologies in their future products.
