It doesn't matter what kind of company you are: if you have new tech to show off, you must go to CES. The automakers will always unveil their latest models at the auto shows, but new entrants to the massively exploding infotainment segment are saved for Vegas.

Among the growing lineup of automakers exhibiting at the show is Audi. Last year, they brought a HUD (heads-up display) connected to a digital gauge cluster powered by NVIDIA. They also showed off concept MMI controllers--some funky, some very cool. All this was held in a modestly sized, blindingly white booth.

This year, Audi upped the size of everything--including the booth. The team from Ingolstadt brought a 3-screen HUD concept that shows vital information to the driver, entertainment to the passenger, and a safe combination of both for driver and passenger in the center.

So how does it work?

Just like other HUD systems available today, a screen is implanted into the dashboard at such an angle that it causes a reflection onto the glass. Anything shown on the screen is reflected on the windshield within the driver's line of sight. Audi is already doing this on cars like the A6 and A7, but right now only information such as current speed and basic navigation directions are available. Audi thinks their customers want more.

The 3-screen concept at CES is much more. Three screens in the dash each display separate items. Again, the driver side is all about what the driver needs to know now: speed, next-turn navigation and adaptive cruise control. The center displays items that both the driver and passenger can see, such as climate and audio. The passenger side screen can display anything. The driver is positioned at such an angle that the passenger screen isn't visible, so things like movies and web browsing can safely be put on display. We aren't sure what browsing Facebook during a bright sunny day would look like, but we commend the effort.

And, like the Mercedes DICE concept shown in last week's episode, Audi's HUD is also gesture controlled.

Currently, there are two major issues with HUD systems: cost and size. The screens certainly add a level of cost that only luxury buyers can settle with, but it is mostly an engineering/design challenge. Engineers have to be able to place the screens and ancillary reflecting equipment in the dash without taking up too much space. And designers have to make it all look good. The concept, at this point, won't win any awards for dashboard of the year.

And that is why this is still a concept. Audi is merely looking to gauge customer and media response to the idea. The key to unlocking this technology may be thinner, transparent polymers that can produce brighter images. Whether Audi implements something similar to what we saw at CES, or a more advanced version down the road, we can't wait either way.
We start our second day of CES at one of the show's largest displays, Panasonic, for a discussion of how consumer electronics are informing automotive innovation. From there, it was off to Audi and Kia for a look at the latest in infotainment and telematics. And, to round out our coverage, we take a spin on the Solowheel gyro-stabilized electric unicycle.
Filed under: vlogic, Audi, Kia, Concept, Electric, Future, CES, Audi Connect

TRANSLOGIC 89: CES 2012, Panasonic, Audi, Kia, Solowheel originally appeared on Translogic on 2012-01-30T10:30:00+00:00.
When Mercedes-Benz rolls with DICE (Dynamic & Intuitive Control Experience), many of the clumsy controls that drivers have to fumble over will be a thing of the past. At CES 2012, luxury automakers like Mercedes and Audi (more on that in next week's episode) have envisioned gesture-based controls to be the future of in-car tech.

Much like the Xbox Kinect, DICE allows a simply swipe your hand to command the car. (Yes, just like in Minority Report.)

So how does it work?

Basically, there are many little proximity sensors in the cabin that detect driver movements. When a certain action is made, like swiping or grabbing toward the screen (in this case, the windshield HUD) DICE recognizes the input and responds. That response can be anything from gathering info on a local business to controlling your favorite music.

All kinds of information can be displayed on the windshield, but there is also another screen located below on the dashboard that displays more detailed information. During the CES demo, DICE simulated driving through San Francisco. When passing by key restaurants, gas stations or shopping stops, DICE placed a circle on the map allowing more info to be grabbed. To gather more, the driver simply had to move their hand toward the indicator and press forward, like pushing a button. From there you can swipe the info down to the dashboard to save for later.

So what's the point?

DICE and other gesture-based systems will further reduce drivers glancing down to adjust their controls. By using the large space occupied by the windshield, DICE is able to project a large amount of info if the driver wants it. The tricky part to DICE is how much information should be shown at any given time.

Imagine that you are driving and have your navigation route projected onto the windshield so that you'll never again miss that hard to spot right-hand turn. Imagine knowing this information without taking your eyes off the road. This is where the OEMs want to go. Customers are asking to be more connected, but major car companies know that solutions have to be both safe and intuitive to catch on.

What do we think?

There's still a lot of work to be done on this. As some of you know, gesture-based systems aren't perfect yet. And certainly something that goes into a car will have to be close to perfect to preclude accidents. For now, we'll to settle with Mercedes' COMAND wheel.

What do you think? Will DICE make life inside a car easier, or just add more distractions? Sound off in comments.

While some EV startups have experienced growing pains, Tesla is readying a big unveiling of their third electric car--even before Model S goes into production. Tesla will premiere their Model X SUV on February 9th at their Los Angeles Design Studio.

Insiders at Tesla are calling Model X, "Pretty revolutionary for the SUV segment." Model X builds on Tesla's portfolio consisting of a roadster, a sedan, and now an SUV.

UPDATE: The Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Monday that a warrant must be obtained by law enforcement in order to track a suspect via GPS device. GPS tracking was found to constitute a "search or seizure within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment," therefore violating a suspect's rights when carried out without a proper search warrant.

Many of our readers have expressed concern over the unwarranted use of GPS devices and the 'Big Brother' paranoia such surveillance creates, while others have argued that these tactics could be of great assistance to law enforcement. How do you feel about the Supreme Court ruling? Sound off in comments.

Have you ever been driving along when suddenly you get the sense that you're being followed?

Over-the-counter GPS tracking products are being put into cars by everyone from the FBI to car dealers and finance companies to cuckolded husbands, and wives who suspect their husbands of cheating.

Don't get us wrong--we're all for equipping our law enforcement agencies with the latest technology to catch the bad guys, but we also value our constitutional rights to privacy and protection from unreasonable search and seizure. And, frankly, the notion of being unwittingly monitored by anyone with the means to a GPS tracking device and access to your ride is just plain creepy.

We're not the only ones who feel conflicted. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear an Obama Administration appeal of the overturned ruling in the case of Antoine Jones. In 2008 Jones was convicted of operating a cocaine ring based on evidence gathered via a GPS device that police used to track his Jeep. A federal appeals court dismissed the conviction, arguing that police had violated Jones' 4th Amendment rights by installing the device without a search warrant. There are similar cases, however, that have upheld evidence gathered during unwarranted GPS tracking on the basis that citizens cannot have a reasonable expectation of privacy when driving or parking their vehicles in public.

Whatever the Supreme Court decides will likely be the final word on warrantless GPS tracking, but in the meantime, if you think your car is being tracked you might want to check for the device in these places:

A lot happened at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit. One way to sum it up: there will be stunningly beautiful hybrids coming our way. Detroit always has been the place for automakers to show off their latest and greatest, and now that includes the latest generation of hybrid and electric vehicles. Here are our favorites:

Ford Fusion

Ford showed up with their highly anticipated 2013 Fusion, but surprised the audience by not only offering a hybrid, but also a plug-in hybrid. Even better, Ford claims that the MPGe will be better than Chevy's Volt. The Fusion Energi will also be the first PHEV to join the mid-sized segment when it comes out in 8-12 months. Power will come from the Fusion Hybrid's 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine, but will include a larger lithium-ion battery--the specs of which have not yet been released. Needless to say, this car looks stunning and will be the largest PHEV sedan available.

The new Fusion Hybrid impresses with a new lithium-ion battery that replaces the older nickel-metal hydride in the current Fusion Hybrid. The more powerful battery allowed engineers to lift the electric-only cruising speed from 47 mph to 62 mph. While official EPA ratings have yet to be announced, Ford estimates 47 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. Those are pretty impressive numbers considering the size.

Acura NSX Concept

We've been waiting for this car and have been curious about how Acura might approach a new NSX. As Honda/Acura are now better known for fuel efficiency over performance, enthusiasts hoped that the next NSX wouldn't be watered down. But Acura is showing that great fuel economy won't hurt performance. The new NSX Concept is all about lightweight materials and a unique hybrid powertrain.

A rear-mounted V6 engine will power the rear wheels in connection with an electric motor mounted in between the engine and Acura's new dual-clutch transmission. Additionally, two electric motors up front will assist with both positive or negative torque to improve cornering and acceleration. We think this will be very useful in hard cornering on twisty roads.

The strategy for Acura is to have an "extremely favorable power-to-weight ratio." Remember how great the original CRX was? That car only had 90 hp, but it weighed 1800 lbs.

Lexus LF-LC

With a hard to remember name, but hard to forget face, Lexus unveiled their LF-LC sport coupe concept. Of all cars in the Lexus portfolio, a sports coupe is what customers have asked for most. Thankfully, this isn't an updated SC430.

This car, while certainly futuristic looking from the outside, also features a pretty impressive interior. The feel is very posh, with shiny metals, lots of wood accents and soft leathers and suede. Infotainment is no less exciting. A pair of 12.3-inch screens display navigation and infotainment all with a touch. Lexus' mouse-based controller is nowhere to be found. Instead, there is a tablet-like surface where the driver can type and add other inputs. It's a pretty amazing sign of things to come.

Toyota Tech Demo

While these features haven't made their way to any vehicles to date, it is a sign of things to come. If you recall, there are numerous 1980's videos portraying visions of the future that are actually coming true today. This could be the case here.
Filed under: blogic, Acura, Ford, Lexus, Toyota, Autonomous, Concept, Electric, Future, Hybrid, Detroit, Plug-In Hybrid

TRANSLOGIC's Guide To NAIAS 2012 [VIDEO] originally appeared on Translogic on 2012-01-20T18:15:00+00:00.
It isn't easy to take something from the automotive world's past and bring it into the future, but if you're going to do it, what better candidate than a DeLorean?

The DMC-12 needs no introduction. Its role in the blockbuster hit Back to the Future has made this little gull-winged coupe one of the most recognizable autos in the world, despite its short-lived production run. Now, DeLorean Motor Company of Texas--who acquired all of the original DMC inventory and distribution rights in 1997--hopes to redefine the DMC-12 for the 21st century.

When Doc Brown blurted out "this sucker's electrical," he wasn't speaking in literal terms, but now the DMC-12 actually is electrical. Thanks to DeLorean's new CEO, Stephen Wynne, fans of the car can buy it, all-new, with a custom-built electric powertrain.

The battery comes from appropriately named California battery company Flux Power and puts out enough juice to propel the DMC-EV for 70-100 miles of range. The new electrical system adds about 200 pounds over the ICE version, but that doesn't mean the performance suffers. DeLorean sought out help from familiar face Epic EV to create a new resin composite underbody that shaves off a few hundred pounds.

The original DMC-12 was never about performance. The 130 hp V6 left many underwhelmed, considering the car's exotic looks. The new electric motors put out 260 hp at the high rpm range and, from 0 rpm, 360 lb-ft of torque. The increased power and lighter underbody means the DMC-EV should go from 0-60 mph in around 5 seconds. But the real question: how long will it take to get to 88 mph? (We're sorry.)

Although much of the car's good looks are original, the interior has been modernized with a GPS nav system and iPod dock. Three stainless buttons below the IP stack release either each gullwing door or both at the same time. The big roundel knob is for selecting Park, Drive or Reverse. Finally, the steering wheel has been updated to include the DMC logo, more stainless steel, and finely stitched leather. The interior is a great execution of modernizing a classic.

Right now the car is just a prototype, but if DeLorean is successful in getting the systems tweaked and optimized, the DMC-EV will go on sale in 2013 with a price of nearly $100,000. Sure, all those 1985 fanboys will have to pony up some serious cash, but at least where they're going, they won't need gas.
Texas-based DeLorean Motor Company is looking to redefine the iconic DMC-12 conceived by John Z. DeLorean over 3 decades ago. While its pop-culture status as the "Back to the Future car" will never change, the DMC-12's reputation for surprisingly poor performance can certainly be addressed. With some help from Epic EV, the folks at DeLorean have swapped the car's original 130 hp V6 for an all-electric powertrain that produces 260 max hp and is reported to go from 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds. That's certainly one way to transport the stainless steel, gull-winged wonder from the past into the future.

TRANSLOGIC 87: Electric DeLorean DMC-EV originally appeared on Translogic on 2012-01-16T09:45:00+00:00. This week's episode of TRANSLOGIC features the Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom EE (experimental electric), a one-off concept car that showcases how an EV might survive--even thrive--in a segment where "compromise" is considered a 4-letter word. During the world tour the vehicle has made in the past year, Rolls-Royce has sought to convince potential buyers that an EV doesn't require a trade-off in style or performance. In fact, within the ultra-luxury segment, the high-tech innovations can enhance the James Bond aura all the more.

Since the car was unveiled in Geneva last year, the 102EX team has focused on whether an EV can provide the quality customers expect to come out of Goodwood. Emily Dungey, the 102EX project manager who rides in the front seat with Bradley during the episode, views this model as "a prototype to talk to people, to see if when they drive the car, they feel like they're getting the Rolls-Royce experience."

In fact, not only does the 102EX experience provide the expected creature comforts, but there's something even a little more distinguished about driving an electric Rolls. The engineers have found some innovative ways to leverage the unique properties of an EV to up the luxury quotient of the 102EX--ways that wouldn't be possible in a petrol-powered Phantom.

For instance, under the bonnet you take out the V-12 and give way to a giant, 96-cell li-ion battery pack which powers two 145 kW electric motors hooked directly to the rear axel. This direct connection means no driveshaft running through the center of the vehicle, and therefore much more interior space available, particularly in the rear footwell. And, rest assured, the 102EX designers take full advantage of this opportunity, lining the entire vehicle floor in leather, rather than carpet.

The interior is incredible, and it's really pointless in this instance to enumerate all the charms encompassed in the cabin. The first thing you'll notice is the Corinova leather seats, which are dyed the most perfect hue through a vegetable tanning process. Usually seats are made with chromium and other materials to treat the leather and dye it, but this is treated with chestnut oil extract on the tri-produced leather to produce more natural lines and personalize the hide.

Another way that the 102EX uses its EV-specific properties to enhance the luxury experience is by offering a new prototype system for induction charging developed by HaloIPT, a British-New Zealand company. Rolls-Royce says it's possible to charge the 102EX by simply driving over an induction charging pad on the floor via a receiver pad on the underside of the car. Never having to worry about remembering to plug in your EV? Why, that's even easier than sending Jeeves to fill the tank!

With a number of fancy electric cars from Tesla to Fisker to BMW--not direct competitors, but targeting perhaps a similar affluent demographic--Rolls has to adapt to continue to provide progressive electric drive trains with the standard impressive bells and whistles. Now, Bradley might want to fashion that Cockney a bit more often if it's going to secure him the keys.
Electric cars are all about economy, but they don't have to be a compromise. Tesla showed us how fun going fuel-free can be with their sporty Roadster. Now, Rolls-Royce has entered the ring with their Phantom-based 102EX "experimental electric." While still just a concept, the Rolls-Royce 102EX displays how an EV should behave in the ultra-luxury segment.
Filed under: vlogic, Rolls-Royce, Concept, Electric, LA

TRANSLOGIC 86: Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom EV originally appeared on Translogic on 2012-01-09T10:00:00+00:00. Superconductors are nothing new. Lowering the temperature of certain materials to extremes such that zero electrical resistivity follows, and the result: levitation. It's a neat trick that you learn in any basic college physics course, but some feel superconductors could have major applications outside of the classroom or lab--like powering a hovercraft, for example. Below is a video that claims to show just that.

While we normally like to speak in terms of real technology and factual information, we thought we'd break the rules to share something fun, even if it's a hoax.

This video comes from an obviously fake source, JIST (Japan Institute of Science and Technology), with a rather brief note: "Here is a short footage on our recent work on quantum levitation. We were inspired by the game Wipe'out to do our work. With this new technology, we hope to revolutionize the world of motor transport; Maybe in a near future we could assist to a real Wipe'out race."

We're not buying it, but when the worlds of transportation, science and video games converge, we can't help but take note.
Google received an early holiday present from the Blue Oval to add to their well-known EV fleet. The Focus Electric you see above is actually the first to roll off Ford's completely transformed Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan.

The all-new 2012 Focus Electric is Ford's first all-electric hatchback - the 2011 Transit Connect Electric was their first EV. It will also be the first EV to offer faster charging tech; Ford claims recharge times of only 3 hours on a 240V charger (almost half that of the Nissan Leaf).

Google spokesperson Parag Chokshi says that, "The Ford Focus is simply the latest addition to Gfleet." Gfleet is Google's own internal car sharing service they provide to their employees. "We plan to add other manufacturers as more EVs become available," added Chokshi.

In addition to Gfleet, Googlers have access to nearly 250 charging stations that pump out free electricity. The extensive charging system has even persuaded many Googlers to go the route of plug-ins.

The next question is: does Google have anything in store for Ford in return? Converting the EV to a self-driving car for Ford to study would sure beat a "thank you" note, but nothing to report on that front yet.

 Show full PR text

WAYNE, Mich., Dec. 14, 2011 - Ford's world-class Michigan Assembly Plant is starting production of the 2012 Focus Electric, expected to be the first five-passenger, all-electric car to achieve more than a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) fuel efficiency rating.

Focus Electric also is the first of its kind to feature faster charging, which will halve Nissan Leaf's time to fully recharge the battery and help drivers to more than double the expected single-charge range in a busy day of driving and recharging.

The car headlines Ford's transformed lineup, one-third of which will feature a model with 40 mpg or more in 2012, building on the company's commitment to give fuel-efficiency-minded customers the Power of Choice.

"The Focus Electric is a shining example of the leading fuel economy Ford is offering for each new vehicle," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. "Whether people want a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full battery-electric vehicle, we have a family of vehicles for them to consider, providing a range of options to best meet their needs and support their driving habits and lifestyles."

Even with relatively stable gas prices, fuel economy is the top purchase consideration for new vehicles. Nearly 45 percent of customers say fuel economy is their top consideration based on a Ford survey of Americans in 36 cities this fall. Styling is the next consideration, with only 16 percent of study participants saying it is their top purchase driver.

Ford's rollout of electrified vehicles began in December 2010 with the 2011 Ford Transit Connect Electric - a small commercial van built in collaboration with Azure Dynamics. Ford's other 40-mpg vehicles include:

Focus SFE
Fiesta SFE
Focus Electric
C-MAX Hybrid
C-MAX Energi
Three vehicles yet to be announced
With 20 years of Ford research and innovation behind the software and hardware technology, the company offers proven engineering and design with Focus Electric. Ford holds approximately 500 patents on the hybrid technology used in the new Focus Electric and its other electrified vehicles.

Faster charging
Focus Electric is designed to offer enough range to cover the majority of daily driving habits of Americans. Its expected 100 MPGe is better than Chevrolet Volt and all electric vehicles with seating for five.

It will be the first electrified vehicle to offer faster charging with 240-volt outlets, which can be installed in customer homes. The battery can be recharged in just more than three hours using a 240-volt charging station, about half the charging time of the 2012 Nissan Leaf.

Faster charging with 240 volts also can extend range as drivers can more quickly recharge between stops - up to 30 miles per charge hour - so they can more than double the vehicle's range with multiple charging stops during a busy day of driving.

A unique value charging feature, powered by Microsoft, will help owners in the U.S. charge their vehicles at the cheapest utility rates, lowering the cost of ownership.

Elec-tech
Focus Electric introduces new features and technologies - including a unique version of the MyFord Touch® driver connect system especially for electric vehicles and a smartphone app called MyFord® Mobile that helps plug-in owners control their vehicles remotely.

The sleek and stylish five-door hatchback is designed to deliver real driving enjoyment as well. The all-electric powertrain and single-speed transmission provide immediate responsiveness and smooth acceleration when the driver steps on the accelerator, up to a top speed of 84 mph.

The Focus Electric is a dynamic driver's car, sharing the steering, handling and braking feel with the agile, sporty, fuel-powered Focus models upon which it's based. At the same time, the absence of a gasoline or diesel engine and outstanding aerodynamics lead to a remarkably quiet, comfortable in-car experience.

A limited number of Focus Electrics will first be available in California and the New York/New Jersey areas. Availability of the Focus Electric will expand in 2012 to the remaining 15 launch markets as production ramps up.

The 19 launch markets also include Atlanta; Austin and Houston, Texas; Boston; Chicago; Denver; Detroit; Los Angeles; San Francisco; San Diego; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Portland, Ore.; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; Seattle; and Washington, D.C.

MAXimum efficiency
The Ford C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid are Ford's first compact multi-activity vehicles (MAVs) in North America and offer high mileage and low emissions as well as a distinctive design and flexible interior.

The C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi use the company's next-generation powersplit hybrid technology in combination with a lighter, smaller lithium-ion battery system. Both models provide maximum fuel efficiency by pairing the high-voltage lithium-ion battery and electric traction motor with a high-efficiency Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine. This technology enables the gasoline engine to run less than the previous generation.

C-MAX Hybrid is targeted to deliver better fuel economy than the Toyota Prius v. C-MAX Energi is expected to deliver better MPGe in electric mode than the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid and to achieve more than 500 miles of driving range using the battery and engine.

The C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi, like the Focus Electric, have been engineered and built to deliver engaging driving dynamics and technologies. In addition, C-MAX Energi and Focus Electric will offer MyFord Touch and MyFord Mobile, designed to make charging and driving the vehicle even more efficient, affordable and easier to live with.

Hybrid transmission leader
When C-MAX Hybrid launches, Ford becomes North America's largest maker of hybrid transmissions.

Ford engineered the transmission and upgraded the controls with a goal of creating the industry's highest-performing and smoothest-operating hybrid transmission. Among the hybrid transmission's innovations:

Electric motors capable of operating at higher electric speeds
A new, super-efficient cooling system that enables higher speeds in electric drive
Optimized gear ratios enabling improvement in fuel economy
More precise controls to deliver higher levels of refinement as the powertrain transitions between engine and electric drive
Reduced weight to help increase fuel economy
This is the first hybrid transmission to be designed and built by Ford. Production is moving from a supplier in Japan to the Van Dyke Transmission Plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., which also will assemble battery packs for Ford's hybrid and electric vehicles.

Building green vehicles cleaner
Ford completely transformed Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich., into an environmentally friendly workplace with flexible manufacturing capability.

With the new electrified vehicles and the new Focus ST performance model also coming in 2012, Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant is the first facility in the world capable of building a full array of vehicles - gas-powered, EcoBoost®, electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid - all on the same production line.

The plant also features one of the largest solar power generation systems in the state as well as several electric vehicle charging stations, allowing the facility to operate on a blend of renewable and conventional electricity.

Renewable energy collected by the solar panels directly feeds the energy-efficient microgrid, helping power the plant. When the plant is inactive, such as holidays, the stored solar energy will provide power during periods of insufficient or inconsistent sunlight. Projected energy cost savings are approximately $160,000 per year.

The plant also has 10 electric vehicle charging stations that recharge the electric switcher trucks that transport parts between adjacent facilities - saving an estimated 86,000 gallons of gas a year.

Plus, 50 percent of the parts arriving for the all-new Focus are packed in cardboard, are carefully collected, sorted and recycled, as is the bubble wrap, the Styrofoam and the water bottles used by employees.

Google Gets First Ford Focus Electric Off The Line originally appeared on Translogic on 2012-01-05T23:30:00+00:00.
Lexus is trying a new recipe with the all-new 2013 GS. We aren't here to go in depth with drive impressions--head to Autoblog for those--we'd rather tell you about the tech ingredients that make the new GS a savory entrée.

Let's start with that huge screen sunk deep into the dashboard. The new massive 12.3-inch LCD runs Enform, the latest infotainment system from Lexus that is essentially a reskinned Entune from Toyota. The interface is setup in a split-screen format; the left side takes up about 70% of the screen space and displays entertainment, nav, apps, and settings; the right side is just for climate, audio settings, and fuel consumption graphs.

Audio sources include satellite, aux-in, USB, Bluetooth and AM/FM. Standard is a Pioneer system, but optional is a Mark Levinson 17-speaker system. The guys over at Harman, Mark Levinson's overlord, were so confident in their system that they gave us a blind test where they compared the Lexus system and their own $70,000 hi-fi system. While we were pleasantly surprised by the sound quality during the demo, we aren't quite ready to say that the Lexus Levinson setup is indiscernible from their hi-fi system.

In the car, we found the premium sound system to recreate a wide range of frequencies and even difficult resonance tones. (Just listen to any Boards of Canada album and you'll hear what we mean.) One of the main reasons the sound is so good is because the GS is "Lexus quiet." The muted cabin sets up the listener with nothing but blissful sound no matter the genre.

Another source of audio is streaming Pandora. Using Enform with any Android or iOS smartphone, listeners can select and create stations right from Lexus' screen. Enform runs over a Bluetooth serial connection and doesn't require a physical connection like BMW connected or MyFord Touch. Apps are first downloaded on the phone, then played on the Enform system.

With the launch of the GS, Enform will gain two new apps to the suite: Facebook and Yelp. Now users can set their statuses and check into locations from their car. They can also find reviews on local businesses and even make reservations over the Open Table app. Having the entire app suite run wirelessly over Bluetooth is what we'd like to see more automakers include in their infotainment systems.

Input for the 12.3-inch screen is one small, flat, joystick-like controller that moves similar to the way a mouse moves across the screen. The main difference is that there are dots inside the controller's sliding base that lift when the screen changes with new buttons, allowing the controller to give physical feedback when it rolls over buttons. This haptic feedback makes operating Enform dramatically easier. The haptic joystick has been in Lexus vehicles since the 2010 RX and HS and with the new GS it's now in its second generation.

Adding to the list of features is a new safety system that actually looks at the driver's eyes and detects dozing off. This is the first anti-sleeping device that actually looks at the eyes. (Mercedes uses an algorithm that detects certain steering wheel inputs.) A heads-up display and blind spot monitor round up the safety features available on the new GS.

We think the GS is a solid entry into the competitive mid-sized luxury segment and it has the tech to keep up with the other automakers. Some may say the icing on the cake is the massive screen, but we think that Enform/Entune is the secret sauce. Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect it to be more reachable than its German rivals.
Filed under: blogic, Video, Lexus, Apps, Android, Blackberry, iOS

The 2013 Lexus GS Adds Tech, Apps, And A Huge Screen [VIDEO] originally appeared on Translogic on 2011-12-30T12:15:00+00:00.
After years of anticipation, Tesla has finally confirmed Model S pricing. The EV sports-sedan starts at $49,900 after a $7,500 tax credit. That's consistent with the estimated price Tesla announced back in 2009, when the vehicle was first debuted. What wasn't known then was the cost of a fully-loaded Model S--about $80,000 for the Signature Performance model and nearly $100,000 for a limited edition version. For a full rundown of options, check out Tesla's Model S pricing page. It's been awhile since we've mentioned Better Place, the global EV infrastructure solutions provider that we visited in Japan earlier this year. In the meantime, Better Place has been busy securing some serious funding in an attempt to make their dream of an EV-friendly future come true.

Better Place announced last month that they were successful in obtaining $200 million in funding. This is just the latest example of financing efforts that have nearly doubled the value of the company within the past 2 years to nearly $2.25 billion, according a press release from the company.
Better Place Raises $200 Million Series C Financing

PALO ALTO, Calif.--November 11, 2011 - With the launch of the first nationwide electric car networks in Israel and Denmark just months away, Better Place today announced that it has secured $200 million through a Series C equity financing from a consortium of top-tier investors and partners, nearly doubling the company's valuation to $2.25 billion (post money valuation on a fully diluted basis) since the last financing in January 2010. Since its founding in 2007, Better Place has raised more than $750 million of equity financing globally in an economic climate where investors continue to seek a competitive alternative to oil.

Better Place will use the proceeds to expand into Western Europe while it continues to advance the company's deployment projects in Northern California, Southern China, Japan, Ontario, Canada, and Hawaii. The company will launch its initial commercial service in Israel and Denmark early next year and has already announced a series of consumer offerings for electric mobility services that are competitive with gasoline-based cars. Better Place will begin initial commercial service in the second quarter of 2012 in Australia, starting in Canberra.

"We've worked hard over the past four years to engineer and build a technology solution that competes with oil-based transportation," said Shai Agassi, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Better Place. "We are entering the next phase of growth for our company where we prove that our solution works, that it's in demand, and that it scales, as we begin to push into new markets and attract new investors and new partners. I believe that our investors should be applauded for having the vision to finance the future of transportation."

New investors in the Series C round include GE and UBS AG, among others. Existing shareholders, including Israel Corp., HSBC Group, Morgan Stanley Investment Management, VantagePoint Capital Partners, Ofer Group and Maniv Energy Capital also joined the round. The Series C financing transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2011.

"With this round, our shareholder base now includes the world's largest banks, blue chip asset managers and leading industrial holding companies," said Idan Ofer, Chairman, Better Place. "Our Board, as well as all of our investors, continues to be both confident and enthusiastic about the opportunity that Better Place presents. The highly competent Better Place team has the talent and technology to rapidly deploy its electric car network on a global scale. Our Board and investor base are committed to leveraging their vast networks, experience, and diverse set of skills to accelerate the global adoption of electric cars."

BETTER PLACE TARGETS WESTERN EUROPE NEXT

By the end of the year, Better Place will have demonstrated its solution across four continents including locations in Europe, the Middle East, the U.S., Australia, China and Japan, with each project providing unique insights into these markets.

With the Series C financing, Better Place will expand its geographic footprint beyond Denmark and further into Western Europe where government policy supporting electric cars and interest in public / private partnership are the strongest.

The company, which currently has more than 100 employees in Europe, will leverage its Danish operations, its European Commission-approved projects, and its market-leading ecosystem of partners as the building blocks for expanding into Western Europe. In September, Better Place opened an office in Paris to serve as its European headquarters, which it will use as a base for attracting talent, investors, and partners.

BETTER PLACE SET TO LAUNCH COMMERCIAL SERVICE

Better Place will launch initial commercial service to a select group of customers in Israel and Denmark in the first quarter of 2012, expanding to full commercial operations over the following months. A similar process will follow in Canberra, Australia in the second quarter of 2012. The company is currently in the final technical validation stage of its solution along with the Renault Fluence Z.E. cars. Interest and demand for Better Place mobility services and the Renault Fluence Z.E. electric sedans continues to be very strong across all three initial markets. Better Place's goal is to help make the switchable battery electric car the top selling car in the markets it enters.

In Israel, Better Place has seen strong market demand from both fleets and consumers, as over 400 corporations, representing a potential of 80,000 employee cars, have signed letters of intent to begin switching their fleets to Better Place as the cars and the service become available.

Denmark is also seeing strong momentum. Almost 7,000 people have come to the Better Place Center in Copenhagen, opened earlier this year, with 90 percent expressing an interest in buying an electric car in the future. The company has received over 1,000 pre orders from both private and business customers. Better Place also has been successful in reaching agreements with 50 of the country's 98 municipalities, covering 69 percent of the population, related to infrastructure deployment and fleet transitions.

In Australia, the company's first large country deployment, Better Place has announced a series of agreements with multi-national companies, including Renault and GE, and leading local companies including ActewAGL, Lend Lease, and the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), for the introduction of electric cars and the rapid deployment of an electric car network. By the end of 2013, Better Place expects to have the largest electric car network in the world in Australia, rivaling other competitive efforts underway in the U.S. and China.

Next to the Mercedes G-Class, the Land Rover Defender could be one of the oldest new trucks for sale (although, you can't buy it in the U.S.). The Defender's potential replacement, the DC100 concept, represents Land Rover's most overdue refresh. Making up for lost time, Land Rover has ambitious plans for the DC100, including some state of the art technology.

Some argue that the Defender started over 60 years ago with the original Land Rover Series I. In 1983, the Series III was heavily modernized, giving birth to the current Defender lineage. The two Defender types were called simply the 90 or 110, depending on wheel base length.

The 90 and 110 were extremely capable, as was the original Series I. But, in order to achieve some serious off-road chops the Defender sacrificed on-road drivability and comfort. In the U.S., only a handful were sold. And for those who expected typical Land Rover luxury appointments inside, disappointment was inevitable. The Defender was a crude, utilitarian summit-to-safari truck. And while many enthusiasts are hopeful that character will remain, Land Rover is moving forward with something that more will enjoy. This isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The DC100 concept takes a rich history of durable capability and injects stylish design and powerful electronics. It's something out of a James Bond film, and it has the tech to keep up.

In order to keep capability at the core of the DC100, Land Rover is considering some new (read: innovative) features. Some that are up for consideration are:

Auto Terrain Response

This is the next evolution of Terrain Response. (You may recall seeing this feature in the new Grand Cherokee or Explorer, or even a number of current Land Rovers.) Auto Terrain Response is exactly what you'd think, but the approach is unique. Using HD cameras, sensors, and a complex algorithm, the DC100 is able to automatically adjust to changing terrain. In addition, an intelligent mapping system called Terrain-i will create a 3D map using a headlamp mounted scanner that suggests the safest route when traversing difficult terrain.

Wade Aid

This system uses sonar, like a submarine, to find water depth. The system then automatically adjusts the ride height and announces a speed advisory.

On-Demand Spiked Tires

If Wade Aid weren't 007 enough, then consider driving around on ice and, with the push of a button, deploying a full set of tire spikes to keep you on your way. The spikes are housed within a second chamber of the tire that, when inflated, cause the spikes to shoot out. We can only imagine the possibilities of this technology.

The new DC100 concept offers a taste of the past, but isn't held down by it. Regardless of how much it changes, the new Defender will still be a Land Rover. And if technology is behind the improvements, then we'd say that Land Rover was successful in bringing an iconic SUV into the 21st century.
No current Land Rover model better embodies the British brand's off-road heritage than the Defender, which hasn't been sold in the U.S. since the late 90's. Now, Land Rover has re-imagined the iconic Defender with their futuristic DC100 concepts. Typically show cars are just that--for show--but, we actually got to drive the DC100 Sport concept and we're happy to report that it's packed with enough tech to make James Bond himself jealous.
Filed under: vlogic, Land Rover, Concept, Future, Luxury

TRANSLOGIC 84: Land Rover DC100 Concepts originally appeared on Translogic on 2011-12-19T12:00:00+00:00.
